Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has stepped up his bid to be fit for this summer's European Championship with some warm-weather training on the Spanish isle of Mallorca.
The 31-year-old was included in Germany's preliminary 27-man squad for the tournament despite struggling for form and fitness during his debut season at Manchester United – where he has not played since March after suffering a knee ligament injury during international duty.
The World Cup winner, dressed in a hoodie and still wearing a pair of Manchester United socks, took part in some light training at the Son Bibiloni sports ground in Palma on Wednesday.
According to Mallorca Magazin, Schweinsteiger said his chances of playing in France 'looks good' before sneezing and joking: 'If this cold does not kill me.'
The former Bayern Munich midfielder's girlfriend and tennis professional Ana Ivanovic has a second home on the island and was there for an official presentation before playing in the inaugural Mallorca Open in June as part of her grass-court preparations for Wimbledon.
Schweinsteiger has managed only 18 Premier League appearances this season as United stumbled to a fifth-placed finish following Tuesday's 3-1 victory in their rearranged fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford
Despite national coach Joachim Low keeping faith in his captain, former Germany winger Mario Basler believes it would be a mistake to take Schweinsteiger – who has won 114 caps for his country – to the tournament.
'I wouldn't take Bastian Schweinsteiger. He's not 25 or 28 years old any more,' Basler told the Rheinischen Post.
'He's had several injuries throughout the season. There's a risk he will be injured again
