The Upper Room daily devotional: Title - Planting the Seed

Read 1 Corinthians 3:6-11
Paul wrote, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”
- 1 Corinthians 3:6 (NRSV)

Since I have a great love and zeal to minister to young gang members, I decided to visit an area where I knew I would find one of the most notorious gangs in our town. In my mission to reach everyone, I requested the use of the community center in our barrio so I could invite gamg members to enjoy some snacks.

Even though these young people knew I would be sharing God’s word with them (something I assumed would be boring to them), they still felt a sense of importance at being the only invitees, with the snacks an added bonus. Eventually, through God’s intervention, I succeeded in starting a dialogue with a few gang members who were willing to hear God’s word.

Over time in these gatherings, the Bible became a seed— planted and nurtured by the prayers of many who desired to see change in the lives of these young people. Without a doubt it is God who gives the growth and helps us to guide others along the right path.

Thought for the Day:

What can I do today to bring God’s word to others?

Prayer: Lord of all, may the word we speak in your name give new life to those who hear it. Amen.

Prayer Focus: GANG MEMBERS
