NICOLA STURGEON’S calls for a second Scottish independence referendum have been condemned after the Secretary of State for Scotland declared that Scots are not interested in another vote.
Dermot Murnaghan clashed with Ms Sturgeon after the Sky broadcaster broke the news of David Mundell’s declaration to the First Minister.
Speaking on Sky News, Mr Mundell said that he didn’t vote Remain so that Great Britain could be torn up by Ms Sturgeon’s attempts to hold a second independence referendum.
He added: “I’m afraid this is all just a pretext for bringing back to the frontline of politics what the SNP are all about, and that is independence.”
Still discussing the subject on his Sunday morning show, Murnaghan brings up Mr Mundell’s comments to Nicola Sturgeon, who is left far from impressed by the news.
The host said: “Well you may have heard it loud and clear – I certainly did – you can talk all you like about a second independence referendum, but you’re not getting one!”
Ms Sturgeon, given her chance to talk about Mr Mundell’s statement, rebuked his comments while branding them “dictatorial”.
She said: “He’s the only Conservative MP in the whole of Scotland and I think people across Scotland would raise an eyebrow at that sort of dictatorial attitude.
“If Scottish Parliament was to put that question again to the people of Scotland, then that is the right of the Scottish Parliament to do so.
“And when push comes to shove, I don’t think a Conservative party, who of course, have caused the circumstances to which this is being considered against, in reality, will stand in the way of that."
Not left beaten by the First Minister’s comments, the TV host hits back declaring that her attempts to dodge Brexit will end with her “smashing the SNP up”.
He continued: “But isn’t it all academic First Minister?
“The people of Scotland can see the facts in front of them right now and all the indications are if you held a second independence referendum – you’d lose, probably smash the SNP up, you’d probably have to resign, it’d make David Cameron’s decision to hold an EU referendum look prudent.”
