Chris Smalling was left with a nasty three-inch gash just above his right eye while on holiday in Bali.
Alarming pictures emerged of the Manchester United defender - currently on the Indonesian island with his partner, Sam Cooke - as he was rushed to hospital.
Manchester United said Smalling had fainted and fallen, taking a bang to the head, after a severe bout of food poisoning.
The 26-year-old was seen to have bandages to his head, neck and left hand while lying on a gurney signing an autograph on a replica United shirt.
Smalling was given the all-clear by doctors, has resumed his holiday and will return to Carrington as planned later this month.
He was afforded three weeks off in line with club policy following England’s humiliating Euro 2016 exit, and is due to link-up with Jose Mourinho’s squad ahead of their pre-season tour in China.
A statement released on the club's official website read: 'Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday.
'The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine.
'Smalling is currently on vacation following his time with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training later this month.'
A statement from Smalling's representatives, Wasserman Media Group, read: 'Following pictures that have been circulating online this morning and contrary to unfounded media speculation we can confirm that Chris was taken to hospital after fainting due to a severe case of food poisoning while on holiday in Bali.
'Chris would like to thank everyone for their well wishes and is now feeling fine.'
The central defender travelled to Asia after England were dumped out of the European Championship by Iceland.
Smalling often spends time relaxing in Bali with his partner. Claims that he was surfing when the accident happened are understood not to be correct.
