Read Psalm 100:1-5
Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!
- Psalm 150:6 (NRSV)
I was working in Malaysia, and my parents were missionaries in Sierra Leone — on their last tour before retirement. Then I received news from my father that my mother had Dengue fever and was not expected to live.
Her last message to my sisters and me was, “Tell everyone that I am having fun!” Then, in the mission hospital, she passed into eternal life.
To some, those last words might seem strange. But I knew that my mother’s faith led her to look ahead with spiritual excitement. My mother spent most of her life serving as a nurse in a Methodist mission in Sierra Leone. She had always lived her life with great passion and faithfulness, and her final message showed me that she was looking forward with eager anticipation to life in heaven.
As Christians we are filled by the Holy Spirit, who gives us passion to serve others. Our life on earth is an adventure, and it’s exciting because we have Jesus as the Lord of our life. Our faith gives us a certainty that even when sadness overtakes us, all will be well because of the love of Jesus.
Following my mother’s example, we can find joy in allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us in serving others. We can also look forward with faithful anticipation to our heavenly future.
