Former Man United and Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes signs two-year deal at Premier League newcomers Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of Victor Valdes.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper has signed a two-year contract after a troubled 18-month spell at Old Trafford where he fell out with manager Louis van Gaal.

Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka told the club's official website: 'You can't imagine how delighted I am because it's not usual to bring players like him to recently promoted teams.

I'm really pleased because he is really committed. All the conversations we've had he knows why he is here and he is coming to add to what we have.

'He knows how strong this group is. It's a privilege for us to be able to bring a player like this to the club.'

The 34-year-old was released by Manchester United in the summer after a spell on loan at Standard Liege last season.
He endured a tough time at United, despite being popular with team-mates, after falling out with Van Gaal and was forced to train alone for months before his spell in Belgium.

Valdes made just five appearances for Standard, including the club's 2-1 win over Club Bruges in the Belgian Cup final

The former Barcelona and Spain international had rival offers from Besiktas and Sporting Lisbon but decided to link up with Karanka at The Riverside.

Valdes believes he was never given a proper chance at United and is keen to prove himself in the Premier League.
