The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Borno Command, said it would confiscate any vehicle or tricycle driven by under-aged drivers.
The State Commandant, Mr Shehu Illiyasu, who gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday in Maiduguri, said every motorist must respect traffic regulations.
Illiyasu said that the command had recorded high rate of accident among under-aged tricycle operators that were not given any licence to operate.
“It is very challenging, the state capital is over stretched and with the gradual returning of peace in the state, people are trooping on daily basis.
“This is the reason why we have so many traffic problems everywhere in the state capital.
“You know most of the youths who are Okada riders have now become tricycle operators because of the ban on motorcycles in the state,’’ he said.
According to him, because of lack of jobs and in order not to remain idle, most of the youths are venturing into tricycle businesses to enabled them have means of livelihood.
“So apart from the fact that they cause a lot of accidents on the roads, they also don’t know that they must have valid driving licence before plying the roads.
“Some parents send their children to school in an overloaded tricycle without thinking of the consequences.
Illiyasu said they had series of meetings with almost all the unions where they were educated and at the same time warned against allowing under-aged people to drive on the roads.
“We have also organised various sensitisation campaigns against overloading, reckless driving and use of expired tyres.”
