Gigi, 23, and model, Malik, 21, have ended their relationship of seven months, E! News confirmed Thursday.
While no reason for the split was given, it appears the couple have been on and off for months.
They were fighting at her birthday celebrations last month, and have 'broken up and got back together a few times,' a source told E!.
The couple has had an on-again, off-again relationship and may reconcile, another source added.
'Zayn and Gigi did break up, but they can likely get back together tomorrow. It's all very unclear what's going on between them now,' one pal said.
'They been having some issues lately that involved communication and getting along.'
Another source said: 'Gigi is really sad about this, though, and in a way would like to work it out.
'It's more about that constant contact with Zayn that she misses and they did get very close.'
Although they dated for seven months, Zayn and Gigi only made their red carpet debut last month when they attended the 2016 Met Gala.
The 'Pillowtalk' hitmaker and the model matched in metallic outfits as they walked the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for the 'Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology' bash.
Gigi previously dated musician Joe Jonas, while former One Direction singer Zayn was previously engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards.
