The Upper Room daily devotional: Title - “Thank You for Being Here”

Loneliness touches everyone. When we're in lonely and uncomfortable surroundings, God longs to be with us. Beyond Loneliness provides guidance for building a friendship with God, who is always with us and listening.

Read Psalm 118:5-14

O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.

- 1 Chronicles 16:8 (NRSV)

Today's Devotional

As a public-utility worker for many years, I went out on service calls — often at odd times and to bad situations. Many times, I was greeted by someone who acted as if I were personally responsible for the sudden disruption. I was often accused of being incompetent, irresponsible, and even sometimes of causing the problem in order to get overtime pay.

Such words hardened my heart and caused me to have bad feelings about others. But usually at least one person in every crowd would say, “Thank you for being here.” Those words of gratitude always outweighed whatever bad things others might have said.

We all have experienced sudden disruptions in our lives — the kind that no call to an ordinary service worker could fix. In these moments we need help that only the Lord can provide. And we can trust that when we call to God in prayer, no matter the time or place, God is there for us. And to God we can always say, “Thank you for being here.”

Thought for the Day:

God is always ready to listen to me.

Prayer: O holy Father, never let us forget that when we call on you in faith, you will be there to give us strength. As Jesus taught us, we pray, “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation”(Luke 11:2-4, NIV). Amen.

Prayer Focus: Public-utility workers
